Location: In the picturesque Esk Valley is the moors village of Danby. It boasts two public houses, both serving food, tea-rooms and a bakery. At nearby Danby Lodge there is an excellent National Park Visitor Centre set in 13 acres of beautiful riverside pasture and housing exhibitions and offering nature trails. The ruins of Danby Castle, built in the 14th Century, are just waiting to be discovered and the last remaining working water mill on the River Esk can also to be found here. The Esk Valley Way is a 35-mile trail that starts at the source of the River Esk and ends at Whitby harbour, going through many of the villages on the Esk Valley Railway. This area makes a superb base to see this tremendous area.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst the North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the traditional market towns of Pickering or Thirsk, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their winding cobbled streets and brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
