Rosedale Abbey was really a priory, a nunnery dedicated to Saint Mary & Saint Lawrence. It was founded under the Cistercian Order by William of Rosedale in 1158 who gave the village it's name. The small priory was home to nine nuns and a prioress, who was the first to develop commercial sheep farming in the area. The only visible ruin of the abbey itself is the turret in the church yard garden.

Although the priory was dissolved in 1535, much of the building remained until 1850 when the expansion of the ironstone mining industry in the area meant that there was a great demand for houses with more than 5,000 men working in the nearby mines. The stone was taken from the Abbey to build the homes and church that now make up the village.
