Caves and Caverns

Caves and caverns are plentiful in the North York moors. As water makes its way down from the hills in the West to the sea in the East, it has carved out underground waterways. Over millennia, these waterways have become a huge network of caves, with many left undiscovered. A trip into a cave can be a chilling experience as it opens a window into an alien environment, often they provide a window into the past. Many of the caves in the North York Moors gave shelter to prehistoric animals and humans. This has led to the discovery of fossils, cave-paintings and ancient tools, dating from the Neolithic period.
