History & Heritage
The North York moors is steeped in tradition. Agriculture was the primary way of life here for over 2,000 years and today nearly 3,000 people of the 25,000 population are still employed in agricultural industries. This means that the moors are helping to keep alive England's farming heritage. One of the appeals of this region is that it still preserves much of the traditional way of life from dry-stone walling, pubs and tearooms, it can often seem like living history. If you look back even further the moors have been proven as a place where the early Mesolithic tribes lived. Ancient cave paintings and stone circles that date back thousands of years have been discovered.
