With agriculture and fishing being a dominant and often only industry in the North Yorkshire for so long, the market was the most important event in a town or village. The buying and selling, of animals, fish, meat, eggs, milk, beer and cheese was the lifeblood of the region and the market was the place to do this trade. Today most of the markets still survive and serve an important role in the community. Markets in the smaller villages often bring together residents from neighbouring villages and therefore, they have an important social function as well as providing everyone with essentials. They are a great place to get good home produce at a reasonable price.
