Founded by the Normans in 1071 Richmond Castle stands as a stunning example of Norman architecture, overlooking the River Swale. The castle is one of the oldest in England and well worth a visit. Richmond is a bustling market town , the weekly Saturday market sells a variety of home made produce including home made jams and crafts, the indoor market is held in the Town's Market Hall from Monday to Saturday and for local produce the Farmers Market is held every 3^rd Saturday of the month. There are also regular craft fairs on in the Market Hall.

Set in such an idyllic location artists have been inspired for years and as a result the town has a thriving arts scene with several galleries selling everything from artwork to crafts and furnishings. The Georgian Theatre Royal in the town attracts some fantastic theatre companies with productions ranging from comedy nights to thrillers, so there is something to entertain everyone.
