Saltburn
Saltburn is a delightful Victorian seaside town which sits on the edge of the Cleveland Way on the North Yorkshire coast. Full of original character and charm it has a magnificent iron pier which can be reached via the water balanced cliff tramway, the oldest working tramway of its kind remaining in Britain. The town is steeped in history and legend has it that it was once a renowned haunt for smugglers.
Saltburn is a regular sea angling venue with fishermen seen in all weathers on the end of the pier. In addition this is also a centre for all year round surfing, with a surfing centre/shop located right next to the beach.
Visitors can enjoy exhilarating walks along the cliffs, sit and watch the colourful...
boats in the bay, or a take a quiet, relaxing stroll through the breathtaking Italian Gardens.
Saltburn has a miniature railway which runs through the Valley Gardens to a delightful tea room at the end of the line. There is also the Tom Leonard Mining Museum which combines an exciting trip underground with a guided tour on the history of mining, and the Margrove Heritage Centre where visitors can learn about the geology and natural history of the area and then maybe stop for coffee in the cafe or browse around the gift shop. Adjacent to the Ship Inn, the converted fishermen's cottages now serve as the Smugglers Heritage Centre, with interactive exhibits and displays full of interesting facts and fiction about the 18thCentury Saltburn smugglers.
