RHS National Gardening Week 16th - 22nd April 2012

As National gardening week begins the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is encouraging the local community in York to come along and join in the transformation of ten green spaces throughout the city. The project is aimed at improving the community by tidying up the area and providing cheap fresh vegetables whilst at the same time bringing the residents closer together.

The "Dig In" team is going to be working in conjunction with local residents to create the full transformation of a new site on Brailsford Crescent. The site labelled the "B Park" is now due to undergo a fantastic transformation and will have new vegetable beds, young fruit trees, and a fragrant lavender path, also it will benefit from some new added seating to allow local people to make the most of their newly created green space. The fruit and vegetables that are produced here are destined to be distributed around the local area for the benefit of residents or used at local events to encourage further involvement by the community.

The community green spaces will encourage people from deprived communities to engage with these spaces to grow their own food and connect with nature, resulting in healthier, happier and safer communities. The project will establish school clubs, and deliver community activities and events to promote the project and its ideals and to ensure high engagement levels by the target groups.

Come down to the site and get your hands dirty in helping with the transformation of this green space into a community-led food growing space. We are hoping to continue with the make over and encourage everyone to take part and grow their own flowers and vegetables.

When is it happening?

There is a regular weekly gardening club which is free and open to all. The Dig In team meet every Thursday and alternate between a morning session (10-12.30) and an evening session (6-7.30). Everyone is welcome to turn up, all tools and refreshments will be provided so you just need to come dressed for the weather.
