Carlton Church

Area: Carlton in Cleveland
Region: Hambleton
County: Yorkshire

Details: A picturesque village located 3 miles south of Stokesley on the North West edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. With a population of just 260 you really do get the feel of an old English village. Carlton has its own ancient Parish with simple but beautiful architecture.

The name Carlton are located in areas of Viking settlement which are the Viking form of Charlton the initial Anglo-Saxon area name. The word 'ton' is Anglo-Saxon for a 'farm' and Charl means “churl” in its Viking form – which is a free holding peasant. Strangely Carlton-in-Cleveland was never actually included within Cleveland County Council boundaries.

The village boast’s a pub and restaurant specialising in Thai food. Bus’s run approximately once per hour between 8am and 5pm in both directions towards Northallerton and Stokesley.
