Details: Located at the foot of the Cleveland Hills is the picturesque village of Great Ayton, a designated conservation area, adjacent to the River Leven. In both the 18th & 19th Centuries, industrial activity in Great Ayton consisted of brewing, weaving, tanning, and tile making. Visitors can explore both the village and surrounding countryside to trace the history of Captain James Cook’s, the explorer, and his connections with Great Ayton, who lived in the village from 8 to 16 years old.
Many reminders of James' early life can be found in the village. The former school where the young James was educated is now home to The Schoolroom Museum. The Cook family lived in Aireyhome Farm which is visible from the public footpath taking in Roseberry Topping and captain Cooks Monument.

The Tourist Information will provide information and leaflets on a variety of walks and local landmarks. Both Captain Cooks Monument and Roseberry Topping located on Easby Moor provide spectacular views on a clear day and are well worth a visit. A trip on the Esk Valley railway which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby is an excellent way to view the splendour of the moors, and visitors can board the train at Great Ayton station. It is also possible to board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway at Grosmont station and travel through to the market town of Pickering.

Great Ayton, is part of the Captain Cook Heritage Trail and is a superb base for a walking holiday (you can join the 110 mile Cleveland Way from the village). It is overlooked by Roseberry Topping, a 320 metres high hill top with a very distinctive profile, and Easby Moor complete a monument to Cook, and provides spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Great Ayton also has a range of other amenities including pubs, restaurants, a health centre and hotels.
