Ryedale Tourist Information

Details: Lastingham is located on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. it is a small and picturesque village, and has few interesting buildings, the most notable being the church, a structure built on the site of a chapel dating to the early days of Christianity in the north of England.

A monastery was founded in 654 by St Cedd, and survived until it was destroyed it in the ninth century by the Vikings. In 1078, Stephen, the Abbot of Whitby, persuaded King William I to rebuild Lastingham, this he agreed to and commenced work on the Abbey. William also built the crypt, which can still be seen today. However, Stephen and his monks left to set up a new monastery in York, leaving only the crypt and the apse of the church complete. Surprisingly the crypt has survived unaltered over the centuries. It’s a self-contained church in its own right and its Norman style is very impressive. Enlarged as a parish church in medieval times, it suffered very little from restoration in 1878.
