Details: Located in the shadow of the Cleveland Hills, Little Ayton is a picturesque village with much of it within a conservation area. The region was once a thriving industrial area including; brewing tile making weaving and tanning.
Visitors can explore the both the village and outlying country side and trace the history of the explorer Captain James Cook’s connections with nearby Great Ayton, who lived there from the age of 8 through to16.The Schoolroom Museum is situated in the original charity school where James was originally educated. The Cook family lived in ‘Aireyhome Farm’ which is visible from a public footpath that also passes through Roseberry Topping and Captain Cooks Monument.
The Tourist Information Centre in Great Ayton has a range leaflets on interesting walks past local historical landmarks, particularly Captain Cook's Monument and Roseberry Topping on Easby Moor and both provide spectacular views. Visitors wishing to explore the North Yorkshire Moors should consider a peaceful and scenic ride on the Esk Valley Railway, which runs from Middlesbrough to Whitby, ands stops at the station in Great Ayton. For the more adventurous it is possible to transfer to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway at Grosmont Station and travel on to Pickering, thus making a great day out.
Little Ayton is part of the Captain Cook Heritage Trail and hence makes an ideal base for a walking holiday. It is possible for walkers to join the 110 mile long Cleveland Way from the village.
The village is overlooked by Roseberry Topping, the most prominent and well-known natural landmark in the region with a very distinctive profile and Easby Moor both which offer fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Roseberry Topping has numerous folk-lore associated with it, and its distinctive shape and prominent position make it clearly visible from several miles away.
Little Ayton and nearby Great Ayton also has a range of other amenities including pubs, restaurants, a health centre and hotels.
