Details: Northallerton is located in Northern England in the County of North Yorkshire and on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and also very close to the Yorkshire dales national Park. It is positioned fairy centrally to Middlesbrough, Darlington and the Famous City of York, and all are easily accessible from Northallerton. Hence the town makes an excellent base for exploring the area.
Transport links are very good including a station on the main east coast railway line with regular trains to London (Kings Cross) and Scotland Edinburgh
The main feature of Northallerton today is its broad main street. Its curving High Street is nearly half a mile long and has many interesting shops, but the town was historically known as a coaching stop and had many notable pubs, inns and restaurants. There is an excellent range of accommodation in the town and surrounding area to suit all tastes and pockets.
Northallerton originally the ‘capital’ of the North Riding of Yorkshire, and today the centre of administration for North Yorkshire can trace its roots back to the Anglo-Saxon era. It was originally named ‘Alverton’ and later ‘Aelfereton’, which is Anglo – Saxon for ‘farm belonging to Aelfere’ a common Anglo-Saxon name. Eventually around the fourteenth century the town became known as Northallerton to differentiate it from many other settlements in Yorkshire that were by then known as ‘Allerton’.
Anglo-Saxon sculpture has been found in the church of All Saints at Northallerton, suggesting that this has long been a place of some importance.
