Region: Ryedale
County: Yorkshire

Attractions:
Churches and Abbeys

Details: Located in the south west of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, approximately two and a half miles from Helmsley, in a secluded and wooded valley, stands the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey a former Cistercian monastery. The Abbey was built in 1123 in an unusual manner lying north – south, rather than the more orthodox build of east – west, this was due to the natural terrain which presented unusual difficulties.

The site was once occupied by a community of 145 monks and 650 villagers. Its current owners English Heritage open the doors to visitors who can sample the towering architecture, and explore the maze of ancillary medieval buildings.

There is also two beautiful ionic mid 18th century temples surrounded by woodland and beautiful gardens with an abundance of wild flowers during spring.
