St Cedd's Church

Area: Lastingham
Region: Ryedale
County: Yorkshire

Attractions:
Churches and Abbeys

Details: This Abbey in the small village of Lastingham was founded by St Cedd in 654. It flourished until it was destroyed by the Danes in the ninth century. William 1 was persuaded by Stephen – the Abbot of Whitby - to restore the Abbey in 1078 and he built the crypt which can still be seen down the stairs. The monks, however, left abruptly to set up a new monastery in York and only the crypt and the apse of the church were completed.

The building is a self-contained church in its own right and has a very impressive Norman style. It is still used as a parish church today.
