Details: Staithes derives its name from the literal interpretation of “landing place". In conversation locals refer to the village as "Steers" so beware if asking for directions.

A peaceful and tranquil location, ideal for holidays or a day visit. You can sit by the harbour and take in the views or sample the offerings from the local cafes and village shops.

Parking is at the top of the hill - getting down to the harbour is much easier than getting back to your car - but its worth it.

The harbour forms a beautiful backdrop with wide sandy beaches and cottages nestled high in the cliff tops this really is a gem in the crown of the North York Moors. Park your car at the top of the hill and enjoy the walk down through the traditional cottages and cobbled streets. On a windy day the waves crashing over the harbour wall are a joy to watch.

There are often many traditional fishing vessels in the harbour, which adds to the beauty of the place, fisherman regularly catch cod, lobsters and crabs. When the tide is out there are also many rock pools to explore which are great for families and kids.

When railways first linked Staithes to the outside world with it came its first major influx of tourists. In particular, any artists were drawn to the area because of its natural beauty and spectacular scenery. Some artwork can still be seen displayed in various locations around Staithes.

In 1975 Staithes became the home of the famous James Cook and at was it this time that he acquired his great love for the sea and he later went on many important voyagers in his ship Endeavour.
The local lifeboat station is also open to tourists. Keep your eyes open for fossils as many have been found in the area.

Staithes is located on the Cleveland Way and is a regular stop off for walkers.
