Details for The Stick Man

The Stick man alias Keith Pickering is based in Helmsley and produces bespoke and beautiful handcrafted walking sticks and a variety of other products including wading staffs and fishing priests.

Keith Pickering produces exquisite handmade walking sticks which are both decorative and functional. Birds, fish and animals are the usual subjects, hand carved in hardwoods or horn, mounted on finest hazel shanks cut from the ancient woodlands around Helmsley in North Yorkshire. Dogs, cats and horses are a speciality, carved and painted in the likeness of your own favourite animal (you can send photos). Thumbsticks, hiking sticks and plain walking sticks are kept in stock or made to order.

Note: The sticks are individually hand-crafted - they are not the cheap plastic-handle versions that you can buy at the supermarket!

Keith has made several sticks for film, TV and theatrical productions. The most famous is the 'magical' walking stick in the "Nanny McPhee" films, starring Emma Thompson.

Sticks have also been made for the TV shows "Emmerdale" and "Heartbeat" and numerous stage shows.

Keith was also commissioned to make a special crook for the new Bishop of Durham, Justin Welby. He wanted an African Rock Hyrax carving on the horn crook - a reminder of his days working in a mission in Africa. Keith said it would look like a mouse and he wasn't wrong!
