Autumn Woods, Thornton Le Dale

Area: Thornton le Dale
Region: Ryedale
County: Yorkshire

Details: Thornton le Dale is situated on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park approximately 30 miles north east of the beautiful City of York. The historic town of Pickering with its spectacular Norman Castle is just a short drive away along the Scarborough Road.

In the 1920’s as the ‘tourist’ era was just beginning, Thornton Dale took the crown of ‘Prettiest Village in Yorkshire’. Boosted by this achievement the village elders re-named the village with the more stylish name of Thornton-Le-Dale.

There is considerable more competition for such a title in today’s climate and the village remains very popular with tourists although is far from being over commercialised.

It is a very pleasant village, situated on the southern fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and consists of a blend of picturesque cottages and more newer properties with considerable character. There is a set of stocks on the village green, an ancient market cross, and a pretty stream, which makes the village a very pleasant place to visit.

A well known and much photographed feature of the village is the picture postcard cottage set on a bend in the stream, and it is a challenge to walk past with a camera in hand and not have the urge to stop and take a photograph for the album. The Christmas lights are also reputed to be amongst the best in the area.

A generous car park is available carefully located beyond trees and a stream, and numerous walks can be accessed once parked.
