Great Ayton
Great Ayton is a large village on the edge of the North York Moors. Once home to the famous explorer Captain Cook the village is full of historical interest and perfectly situated as a base from which to visit more of the towns in the surrounding countryside. Visitors here can take advantage of the beautiful scenery and enjoy stunning walks stretching out over the heather clad moors.
The River Leven runs through the centre of the village and offers visitors a delightful place to take relaxing strolls along the banks and maybe feed the ducks. Great Ayton boasts two village greens which are ideal picnic spots in the good weather. There is plenty to do in the village with a tennis court, a bowling green and...
football fields. The high street has a good range of shops and places to eat as well as the traditional country pubs serving real ale.
To celebrate its most famous citizen Great Ayton is home to the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum which is a fantastic reconstruction of an 18thcentury school room as well as showing interactive displays about James Cook. Nearby there are other historical sites including the striking Guisborough Priory. The pretty market towns of Stokesley and Helmsley are close by and make a great day out.
For serious walkers the village has several signed trails and is a great base for those wishing to explore deep into the Moors. The village is also close to Roseberry Topping, a hill of some 1051 feet ,the top of which offers impressive views of the Yorkshire countryside.
