Swainby

Swainby is a peaceful village located on the western edge of the North York Moors National Park, set below the Cleveland Hills with Scugdale Beck flowing through the centre. The characteristics of the village and the surrounding area consist of traditional Yorkshire dry stone walls, sweeping hills, sheep, postcard perfect heather and moor land, and the High Street is frequently brought to a standstill by horses or a family of ducks!

Close to Swainby is the ruins of Whorlton Castle, and Swainby appears to have been built some time after the castle was abandoned, and mainly for the purpose of providing homes for the miners who once worked the nearby hills for ironstone and jet in the 19th century.
